Health Care Battle Moves to the Senate

It is a great irony that the closer Congress gets to passing a health care bill the weaker the bill seems to those of us on the left. The Senate health care bill is not as good as the House bill and even that is not as good as we would like. But for the moment our focus is on how to improve the Senate bill so that  the conference committee that reconciles the two bills will provide an opportunity to end up with something better than either branch of Congress passed.

Sanders Amendment

Senator Bernie Sanders has introduced an amendment to the Senate Bill (Amendment 2837) which would substitute a single payer plan for the existing Senate Bill. Senators Brown and Burris have cosponsored the bill. It is not clear when this amendment will come up for a vote. But it is quite possible that it will be voted early in the week. On Monday please call your Senators and urge them to co-sponsor Sanders Amendment (2837) and to vote for it when it comes up for a vote. Simply call the Capitol switchboard (202-224-3121) and ask to be connected to your Senator's office.

Abortion Rights

One of the most conservative Democrats, Senator Nelson of Nebraska, plans to introduce an amendment to make the health care bill more restrictive of a  women's right to choose to have an abortion. The bill which is already too restrictive of women's rights must not be made worse. Ask your senator to  vote against any amendment to the health care bill that would restrict a women's right to choose to have an abortion  by inserting the same or similar language to the infamous Stupak  amendment that passed in the House bill.

Please forward this message widely.
